OIL & GAS
UZBEKISTAN'S OIL & GAS SECTOR
Uzbekistan contains around 594 million barrels of proven oil reserves, with 171 discovered oil and natural gas fields in the country.
The majority of its known oil fields are in the Bukhara-Khiva region, including the Kokdumalak field, which accounts for about 70% of the country's oil production. The country also has oilfields in the Ferghana Valley region, the Usturt Plateau, and the Aral Sea.
With estimated natural gas reserves of 66.2 Tcf, Uzbekistan is the second largest natural gas producer in the CIS after Russia and one of the top ten natural gas-producing countries in the world. It produces natural gas from 52 fields in the country, with 12 major deposits accounting for over 95% of production. These deposits are concentrated in two general areas: the Amu Darya Basin and the Mubarek area in the southwest.
Uzbekistan exported approximately 16 Bcm of natural gas during 2008. It sends most of its natural gas exports to Russia. It also exports natural gas to Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.

Active in every element of the hydrocarbon value chain, Zeromax has leveraged and financed the acquisition and managed the introduction of the latest global technologies in the Uzbek energy sector. Through its pipeline projects, Zeromax has brought new energy sources online in Uzbekistan and revitalized existing production facilities with clean, environmentally-friendly solutions.
The company's activities include:
-
Planning and Engineering
- Project surveys, project documentation, feasibility studies, and industrial and civil engineering are undertaken byNeftgaz Sanoat Loyiha
, a joint venture Zeromax created in 2005 with the national oil and gas holding company, UzbekNeftegaz. -
Exploration and Production
- To explore for oil and gas, Zeromax set up a joint venture,
Gissarneftgaz
, in 2005 with Shurtanneftegaz, a subsidiary of UzbekNeftegaz. The company is developing oil and gas deposits in Qashqa Darya in southwestern Uzbekistan. - In 2008, Zeromax’s wholly-owned subsidiary,
UzGazOil
, established a special unit to explore for hydrocarbons in a 4,000 km² area in Kashkadarya Province. Field development and production at Well No.6 in the Nishan field is undertaken byKultakneftgaz JV.
- To boost productivity of the
Kokdumalak-Gaz
deposits and to protect the environment, Zeromax established Kokdumalak-Gaz, a joint venture that designed and constructed the country's first compressor station at the Kokdumalak field in southern Uzbekistan. The facility now recovers and exports 4.5 Bcm of gas per year that was previously flared. - Zeromax owns 25% of
Shurtan Gaz Makhsulot
, a joint venture established in March 2006 with Arch Energy Ltd (25%), and Shurtanneftegaz (50%), a subsidiary of Uzbekneftegaz. Shurtan Gaz Makhsulot is a gas processing plant which produces liquified natural gas for export and the home market.

-
Construction
- ThroughNeftGazMontaj
, Zeromax designs and constructs pipelines, compressor stations, and other oil and gas infrastructures, utilizing the latest technologies built to exacting international quality and reliability standards.
NeftGasMontaj has also constructed all the pipelines at well-sites of Gissarneftgaz and connected wells with the main gas pipelines of the Uzbek gas exporting system. It constructed the compressor stations for Kokdumalak-Gaz and is constructing a compressor station for Shurtan Gaz Makhsulot JV. -
Refining and Retailing
-UzGazOil
, a Zeromax subsidiary established in 2003, refines crude oil to produce petroleum-based products for its 45 newly constructed service stations in Tashkent. The company plans to have 100 service stations in operation by 2012.
